Oregon Health & Science University is an independent public corporation. Its academic programs are coordinated with the state's higher education system and include the schools of Medicine, Nursing and Dentistry. Graduate programs are available through all three schools. OHSU Hospital has approximately 400 beds with a census that generally is high.

The Doernbecher Children's Hospital is a part of this complex and is a major pediatric referral center for the entire Pacific Northwest region.

The Portland Veterans' Affairs Medical Center is an integral part of the OHSU complex. The VAMC is intimately involved in numerous sharing agreements, clinical resources and research projects with OHSU. The VAMC is a state-of-the-art facility consisting of 400 beds incorporating both acute medical and surgical care.
