Dr. Swanson's recruitment to OHSU dramatically increased the department's surgical expertise and in 1994 he became chairman of the department. Under his direction, the Department of Dermatology has grown into a nationally-ranked department with nationally and internationally-recognized sub-specialty expertise covering a broad spectrum of dermatologic conditions. Dr. Swanson is a recognized leader of surgery education with more than 28 fellows receiving training under his direction.
Dr. Swanson is an international lecturer and author regarding the detection and treatment of skin cancer, as well as cosmetic surgery procedures, such as laser surgery, dermabrasion, chemical peels, collagen injections, Botox and liposuction. He has authored more than a 160 journal articles, authored or edited five textbooks and contributed chapters to numerous textbooks.

Overview
Neil A. Swanson, M.D., professor of dermatology, otolaryngology and surgery,
is chairman of the Department of Dermatology, associate dean for clinical affairs
for the OHSU School of Medicine, and associate director of clinical operations at
the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. Dr. Swanson came to OHSU in 1989 from the University
of Michigan where he was the director of the surgical unit and the multidisciplinary
melanoma program. Dr. Swanson's recruitment to OHSU dramatically increased the department's surgical expertise and in 1994 he became chairman of the department.
