Overview
Dr. Blauvelt came to OHSU from the Dermatology Branch of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD. He received his MD degree from Michigan State University followed by a dermatology residency at the University of Miami. Dr. Blauvelt then trained as a postdoctoral fellow in the Dermatology Branch under the direction of Dr. Stephen Katz, followed by another postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Molecular Microbiology at the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Blauvelt has received several national awards for his research into how HIV infects and affects Langerhans cells and how human herpesvirus 8 causes Kaposi's sarcoma, including induction into the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the American Dermatological Association. He currently performs NIH- and VA-funded basic science research on the immunopathogenesis of psoriasis as well as being Principal Investigator on several psoriasis clinical trials at OHSU. Clinically, Dr. Blauvelt specializes in the care of complex psoriasis patients both as Chief of the Portland VA Dermatology Service and is the Psoriasis Research Director of OHSU's Center of Excellence for Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis.
