Valle Nazar-Stewart, Ph.D.

  • Assistant Staff Scientist, CROET

Dr. Nazar-Stewart received her doctoral degree in epidemiology from the University of Washington. She has a master’s degree in health policy and worked as a policy analyst at the US Environmental Protection Agency. Prior to joining CROET, Dr. Nazar-Stewart was on the faculties at the University of Washington and the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Nazar-Stewart has expertise in the use of molecular biological techniques in epidemiological studies. Dr. Nazar-Stewart is Vice Chair, Community Advisory Board to the Deschutes County Health Department

Research Interests

My principal areas of interest are: (1) the molecular basis for disease; (2) incorporation of biological markers into epidemiological research on disease etiology; and (3) use of research results in the formulation of public policy. My research has focused on biological determinants of differential susceptibility to cancer and on biological markers for early detection of cancer. Specifically, I have studied genetic polymorphisms for biotransformation enzymes that metabolize carcinogens and other xenobiotics, and that are related to interindividual differences in risk for disease. I currently conduct studies of the interactions between several polymorphic enzymes (including many cytochrome P450 enzymes and the gluthathione transferases) and exposures to tobacco and alcohol in determining risk for cancers of the lung, nasopharynx, and oral cavity. I am also studying an enzyme, glutathione S-transferase pi, that is overexpressed in non-small cell lung cancers as a marker for early diagnosis of lung cancer. In future research, I plan to examine effects of pesticide exposures on DNA damage (as an intermediate endpoint in carcinogenesis) and cancer. I am also interested in further exploring the biology of gender differences in susceptibility to certain cancers, as well as complex interactions between genetic determinants of susceptibility and hormonal, dietary and occupational exposures.
