Dr. Linda McCauley

Linda A. McCauley, RN, Ph.D., FAAN

  • Scientist, CROET
  • Professor of Nursing, School of Nursing, OHSU

CROET bids farewell to Dr. McCauley who is assuming a new position as the Professor & Associate Dean for Research, School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA in January 2004. New contact information for Dr. McCauley

Dr. McCauley received her doctoral degree in environmental health/epidemiology from the University of Cincinnati. She holds an adjunct appointment as Professor in the OHSU School of Nursing. Dr. McCauley has special expertise in the design of epidemiological investigations of occupational and environmental hazards. She is nationally recognized for her expertise in occupational and environmental health nursing.

Research Interests

My research interests are in the areas of occupational and environmental science and epidemiology. Current work includes a community-based intervention and research project targeted at reducing pesticide exposures among minority farmworkers. This work aims to identify culturally-appropriate interventions to decrease the pesticide exposures of farmworkers and their children. The epidemiological approach used in these investigations incorporates survey questionnaires on exposure, biomarkers of exposure to organophosphate pesticides and assessment of neurobehavioral function. A major goal of this research project is to disseminate the findings in ways that are understandable and meaningful to migrant and seasonal farmworkers. My research program in agricultural health also includes studies investigating pesticide exposures among adolescent migrant farmworkers that explored adolescent worker’s knowledge, beliefs and protective practices against pesticide exposure. We are currently testing several methods of pesticide education to determine more effective methods of informing these youth workers about the hazards they encounter in their work. (Information on Agricultural Occupational and Environmental Health studies in Oregon.)

Previous investigations have included epidemiological studies of unexplained illness among veterans of Gulf War and exposures to low levels of chemical warefare agents. I also provide epidemiological consultation on a number of issues of concern to the Oregon workforce. Most recently I have participated in reviews of cancer risks among fire fighters and Hepatitis B and C prevalence among public safety workers. New methods of surveillance of work-related injuries and illness is the focus of a current study being conducted in partnership with private insurer workers compensation databases and state public health personnel.
