Double label immunofluorescence reveals the presynaptic terminals (green) and dendritic arbor (red) of a cultured hippocampal neuron that has been growing in vitro for about 2 weeks. The presynaptic terminals are labeled with antibodies that recognize synuclein (also called synelfin), a presynaptic protein that has been implicated in both Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. The dendritic arbor is immunolabeled with antibodies for MAP2, a dendrite specific cytoskeletal protein. The immunolocalization of the synuclein protein is described in the paper by Withers et al. (1997) Dev. Brain Research 99, 87-94.
