CROET has an outstanding physical facility for handling samples for light or
electron microscopy. We have a unique multi-suite perfusion, dissection, and embedding
area. This area is fully equipped with two down draft autopsy tables; five fume
hoods, two walk in refrigerators, a walk in freezer, surgical instruments, and
vapor anesthetic machines. Tissues of interest may be prepared using techniques
from fresh frozen for fluorescence microscopy to embedding in plastic for electron
microscopy. Samples may be sectioned using a cryostat, paraffin microtome, or
ultramicrotome. Samples may be viewed in phase contrast, differential interference
contrast, bright field, darkfield, fluorescence, and transmission electron microscopy.

Usage Fees
Histology has a basic Buy-in-fee to cover supplies and service contracts
($383.94/fiscal year, July 1 to June 30). If a principal investigator pays the fee,
he and his staff will have full access to the facility, equipment, and a
reasonable and equitable share of the supplies. Core users are expected to
sign up as needed and share the facilities and supplies.
Work can be done by the core and will be charged out at $34.31/hour.
Use of the electron microscope is also charged out at $34.31/hour.
