Watch Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh videos for tips on preventing common, serious childhood injuries
As the parent or caregiver of a child, you can help to prevent life-altering injuries to that child.
Two 10-minute videos from Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, both titled “Only a Moment,” offer you tips for preventing injuries that commonly bring children to the hospital’s emergency room and cause serious injury or death. One video addresses infant and toddler safety and the other focuses on school-age child and teenager safety.
You’ll hear from Edward Barksdale, Jr., MD, and Barbara Gaines, MD, who share their experiences as parents and Children’s Hospital Pediatric Surgery physicians. They suggest that you can take steps to prevent life-altering injuries to your child that occur in only a moment while still giving your child freedom to have fun.
For infants and toddlers, major safety concerns include:
- CPR for parents and caregivers
- Choking, including not allowing children to eat in the car
- Drowning, including from uncommon sources like the toilet or a bucket
- Falls
- Motor vehicle crashes, including proper restraints
- Poisoning
- Shaken baby syndrome
For school-age children and teenagers, serious issues include:
- ATVs
- Bike safety
- Firearms
- Motor vehicle crashes, including risk factors for teen drivers
- Poisoning, mainly from alcohol
- Suicide, including what to look for
