Volunteer With Us!

Are you a stay-at-home parent seeking a way to maintain or build professional experience?

Are you a college student or recent graduate seeking experience in the health care or education fields?

Are you a retiree looking for a way to contribute to your community? We are seeking committed, energetic and motivated individuals who are interested in the healthcare and/or education fields to actively participate in the Doernbecher Children’s Safety Center. The volunteers/interns will work under the supervision of the program coordinator and will have direct contact with patients and families when staffing the center.

Volunteers/interns will have a meaningful opportunity to participate in a project that will enhance their professional development while exposing them to an issue of critical importance within an outpatient clinical setting. Through this exposure and on-site training, they will gain a working knowledge of the safety and injury prevention needs of the Safety Center’s priority population (0-12 years).

We seek individuals who can make a commitment of four hours per week for at least six months. Flexible scheduling is possible within weekday clinic hours (M-F, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm.)

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Requirements: All Safety Center interns and volunteers must be 18+ years of age and be able to:
* Communicate effectively with families, children, and medical staff
* Exhibit a strong work ethic and good organizational skills
* Work independently and as part of a team
* Learn safety and injury prevention statistics, regulations, and tips (Experience in this field is not a prerequisite; training will be provided.)

Commitment: All Safety Center interns and volunteers must be able to commit to:
* Completing all required steps to becoming a volunteer through Doernbecher Volunteer Services, including completing an application, interview, background check, tuberculosis test and any necessary immunizations
* Working one 4-hour shift per week
* Attending quarterly evening trainings/meetings

Opportunities: All Safety Center interns and volunteers will have the opportunity to:
* Counsel parents and families about safety and injury prevention
* Provide educational material to families and answer questions
* Assist parents in the purchase of safety supplies to meet their needs
* Demonstrate the proper use of various safety devices to parents and families
* Participate in the design of safety displays and brochures
* Participate in community outreach and education on injury prevention

Compensation: Although this is an unpaid position, the following alternate compensation is offered:
* Free Tri-Met pass or parking permit provided for volunteer/intern shifts
* OHSU employee/volunteer discounts on various services, products, travel, sporting and cultural event tickets, etc.
* For students: course credit, as available based on educational institution and major
