Diverse Communities Project

The Diverse Communities Pilot Project is aimed at increasing our educational efforts and improving access to information and low- or no-cost safety supplies for families in the Portland area. Through a partnership with Neighborhood House Head Start Program, we will be able to carry our unique services beyond the walls of the hospital into communities where a need for safety education and distribution of supplies exists.
The three Head Start programs facilitated by the Neighborhood House, Inc. currently serve 175 children under age five whose family income is at or below the federal poverty line. Children enrolled in the Neighborhood House Head Start program are from seven distinct cultural backgrounds and speak more than twelve languages. We will partner with the multicultural and multi-lingual Head Start staff to develop training, implement injury prevention education sessions with parents, translate materials, and to ensure that injury prevention information are sensitive to the needs of their diverse population.

Safety Center in a Box Project (sponsored by Kohl’s Cares for Kids)

Thanks to a generous donation from Kohl's, the Safety Center is visiting various community events and child care facilities to give away free safety supplies and provide education to children and families.
