William H. Sack, M.D.
Professor of Psychiatry, Emeritus
William H. Sack, M.D., served as director of the Division of Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry from 1974 to his retirement in 1997. He began his
career in medicine as a Lt. Commander for the U.S. Public Health Service
where he practiced from 1963 to 1965 in the Division of Indian Health
in Montana. In 1969, he became an instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard
University-Massachusetts General Hospital until 1973 when he moved west
to become Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at OHSU.
He was appointed as Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics
in 1977, and in 1985, Professor of Psychiatry.
Dr. Sack completed his undergraduate training at Lewis and Clark College
in Portland, Oregon in 1956, and graduated from the University of Oregon
Medical School in 1960. He performed an internship in pediatrics at
the University of California Medical Center, 1960 to 1961, and did his
residency training in pediatrics and psychiatry at the UCMC, the University of
Oregon Medical School, and Harvard University-Massachusetts General Hospital
from 1961 to 1969. He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics
and American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Over the course of his long career, Dr. Sack has consulted widely and
participated extensively in many professional and community activities.
He is an energetic researcher and has published prolifically in the
fields of psychiatric disorders among Native American children and
adolescents and the longitudinal effects of childhood trauma on Cambodian adolescent
refugees. He continues to pursue research interests in retirement, treats private
patients, and consults as a forensic child and adolescent psychiatrist.
