Pediatric Consultation-Liaison DESCRIPTION:
The consultation-liaison service provides inpatient psychiatric care and consultation for medically ill children and their families at Doernbecher Children's Hospital, the outpatient pediatric clinics, the Emergency Department, and Shriner's Children's Hospital. The resident works collaboratively with primary care pediatricians, emergency staff and medical students to identify and treat the psychosocial disturbances contributing to illnesses.

DURATION: Four months, 12 hours per week in the second year.

SUPERVISION:
Dr. McKelvey provides one hour of formal supervision per week, as well as informal supervision as needed. He staffs each case with the resident.

METHODS:

  • Performs approximately 36 formal consultations which average three to four hours per consult; half of this time is spent away from the bedside.
  • On-call by pager to the pediatric staff; responds immediately to requests for consultation.
  • Makes rounds with inpatient ward staff.
  • Liaison activities include informal consultations, participation in pediatric case conferences, and participation in the weekly pediatric neurology clinic.
  • Didactic teaching includes weekly reviews and tutorials.
