DESCRIPTION: Longer term inpatient
treatment for severely disturbed children and adolescents unresponsive
to shorter community hospital treatment.Treatment modalities include:
behavior modification, cognitive therapy, group therapy, family
therapy, psychopharmacology and intensive psychotherapy.
DURATION: Four months, three days per week
in the first year.
SUPERVISION: Weekly teaching rounds,
weekly one-hour supervision with staff psychiatrist, and frequent, informal
supervision. Resident meets regularly with program director at OSH to
discuss administrative and planning issues related to community
resources, the juvenile justice system and state mental health planning.
The division faculty provide on-site supervision
when they staff the twice monthly case presentation conference.
METHODS:
- Participates in screening evaluations with the Community Outreach team.
- Supervises overall treatment for each child in a case load of five patients of different ages and with different clinical problems.
- Performs psychiatric and medical assessment of each assigned child. Observes psychological testing for at least one case.
- Psychopharmacology training emphasized with reading and discussion required from psychopharmacology syllabus.
- Co-leads one group; conducts individual and family therapy for cases as appropriate.
- Presents a case at one monthly case conference during the rotation.
- Encouraged to develop a research focus which can serve as a topic for staff development.
