Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic

700 SW Campus Drive
Portland, OR 97239-3098
Robert S. McKelvey, M.D., Director
DESCRIPTION:
The Outpatient Clinic rotation provides the skills and knowledge required
for care of severely disturbed youth at high priority for services; as
well as for youth with other psychiatric and mental health problems.
Because most of the patients and families referred to this clinic have
multiple problems, a comprehensive, collaborative approach is necessary.
The ability to develop treatment plans that make the best possible use of
available treatment resources requires collaboration with community
resources as well.
DURATION:
Two years, 6-13 patient contact hours per week.
SUPERVISION:
Dr. McKelvey oversees the overall distribution of cases for each resident.
Administrative and clinical problems are solved by the trainees and clinic
director. In the first year of training, residents receive one hour of
supervision weekly, and in the second year, two hours weekly. Supervision
may employ shared interviews, case conferences, audio and video tapes, in
addition to traditional approaches.
METHODS:
- Caseloads vary with time commitments in other rotations and are
monitored to provide experience with a spectrum of disorders, gender
and ages. Residents keep a log of cases according to age, gender,
diagnosis, treatment and disposition.
- Residents' outpatient commitment increases in the second year
when inpatient rotations have been completed. The central learning
experience is thorough diagnostic and therapeutic work with youth
and their families. More intensive therapy is emphasized in the
second year of training.
