DESCRIPTION:
Located off campus in Beaverton, the OHSU Children's Psychiatric Day Treatment Center
offers a milieu treatment program for emotionally handicapped
and severely disturbed young children (ages 3-7). Groups of eight
children supervised by three multi-disciplinary staff participate in
individual and group play therapy from 9 to 2 p.m. throughout the
calendar year. Parents are also asked to participate weekly, and
receive parent training, therapy and counseling services.
DURATION:
Four months, two days per week in the second year.
SUPERVISION:
Provided weekly by a clinical supervisor and the consulting child
psychiatrist, Dr. Kyle Johnson. At the beginning of the rotation, the resident meets
with the program director to discuss program administration
in the context of social welfare policies and practices. The resident
also meets with the training coordinator and the intake director to
learn about the relationship of the Day Treatment Center to Portland
schools and other agencies.
METHODS:
The resident is assigned to a group of eight children, and participates in all group activities, including:
- Three-month evaluations of at least two children.
- Meetings, family therapy and home visits with parents/guardians
in collaboration with day treatment staff.
- Written classroom observations of assigned children.
- Screening and psychiatric evaluations with the consulting
child psychiatrist:
neurodevelopmental assessment with Denver Development Assessment;
neurological examination, developmental history, and intelligence,
personality and educational tests.
- Educational presentation to day treatment staff on a topic of
interest to resident and staff.
- Appropriate literature review.
