DESCRIPTION: Located off campus in Beaverton, the OHSU Children's Psychiatric Day Treatment Center offers a milieu treatment program for emotionally handicapped and severely disturbed young children (ages 3-7). Groups of eight children supervised by three multi-disciplinary staff participate in individual and group play therapy from 9 to 2 p.m. throughout the calendar year. Parents are also asked to participate weekly, and receive parent training, therapy and counseling services.

DURATION:
Four months, two days per week in the second year.

SUPERVISION:
Provided weekly by a clinical supervisor and the consulting child psychiatrist, Dr. Kyle Johnson. At the beginning of the rotation, the resident meets with the program director to discuss program administration in the context of social welfare policies and practices. The resident also meets with the training coordinator and the intake director to learn about the relationship of the Day Treatment Center to Portland schools and other agencies.

METHODS:
The resident is assigned to a group of eight children, and participates in all group activities, including:

  • Three-month evaluations of at least two children.

  • Meetings, family therapy and home visits with parents/guardians in collaboration with day treatment staff.

  • Written classroom observations of assigned children.

  • Screening and psychiatric evaluations with the consulting child psychiatrist: neurodevelopmental assessment with Denver Development Assessment; neurological examination, developmental history, and intelligence, personality and educational tests.

  • Educational presentation to day treatment staff on a topic of interest to resident and staff.

  • Appropriate literature review.
