DESCRIPTION: The child psychiatry resident participates in
interdisciplinary evaluations of developmentally disabled children
as part of a team including a psychologist, pediatrician, social
worker, special educator, speech pathologist, audiologist, occupational
therapist, physical therapist, nutritionist, and geneticist. Staffings
are held to prepare problem lists and treatment plans to present to
families. Reports and referrals are sent to appropiate community
agencies.
DURATION:
Four months, one day every other week in the second year.
SUPERVISION:
The resident receives supervision as needed, and reviews current
literature and readings on mental retardation and developmental
delay.
METHODS:
- Resident serves as a case coordinator on a rotating basis
with other professionals.
- Makes early contact with families to prepare to meet their
needs.
- Guides family through evaluation and gives follow-up feedback.
- Occasionally the resident may become the therapist for
the child and/or the family. Treatment may consist of psychotherapy,
psychopharmacological therapy, behavior modification, and/or family
supportive therapy.
