Les G. Busch, assistant professor of psychiatry and director of the Children's
Psychiatric Day Treatment Center (DTC), received his M.Ed. from the University of
Portland in 1972. His past positions include executive director of the Grand Ronde
Treatment Center, 1973-74; assistant administrator for Community Resources, State of
Oregon, Children's Services Division, 1974-82; and executive director of the
Christie School, 1982-85. He served as assistant director of DTC from 1985 until 1997,
when he assumed the directorship. In addition, he serves on planning committees for
conferences sponsored by the Center on Mental Health Needs of Adopted Children,
Child and Adolescent Depression and the Northwest Children's Mental Health Conference.
Busch has been a pioneer in the implementation of multidisciplinary treatment in Oregon,
and was one of the initial planners for the Day and Residential Treatment Standards
(DARTS) programs. He has served as
a member of the Children's Diagnostic Center at Edgefield Lodge and the Parkrose Shaver
Project, which were funded by the National Institute for Mental Health and State Mental Health Division
as model programs for interdisciplinary treatment and special education
efforts. At the state level, he has participated in numerous professional associations,
including the Oregon Association of Treatment Centers, the Oregon Conference of Private Agencies,
the Oregon Mental Health Counselors Association and the American Mental Health Counselors Association.
On the local level, he is a member of United Way Executive Association, Early Intervention
Council for Multnomah County, Early Childhood Interagency Coordinating Council and
Multnomah County Mental Health Executives Association.
His research interests have focused on post-adoption mental health services for children
and their adoptive families, training for mental health professionals in the field of
adoption support, and the responsiveness of the children's social services system to emergency
group and shelter care needs.
