In 1984, city planners laid out a grid system for the City of Portland. In order to take advantage of the spectacular mountain and river views the city blocks were designed to be small, making the many of the attractions in the city within walking distance. Visit the Portland Art Museum (one of the largest in the country), take in a play at the Portland Center for Performing Arts or Portland Center Stage, or enjoy world class opera and ballet at the Keller Auditorium. Portland is full of cultural opportunity. Looking for something more casual? Portland is sprinkled with Microbreweries, coffee shops, boasts the largest independently owned bookstore (Powell's City of Books covers an entire block) and many excellent restaurants.

Sports fans support professional basketball teams (NBA Blazers and WNBA Portland Fire) and the Winter Hawks ice-hockey team at the new Rose Garden arena. If you are into sports yourself, you will appreciate the biker friendly atmosphere (Bicycling magazine voted #1 bike city in America, 1999) and Forest Park, the largest city park in America (5,000 acres within the city limits).

Is there any wonder why Portland has been repeatedly voted most livable city?
