Tools
for Communicating With Educators
The exchange of information between health and educational providers is an important part of the successful management of CSHN. Health professionals depend on information from schools especially for children with ongoing learning and behavior problems, for example, a child with ADHD. Conversely, Educational staff depend on information from health professionals about a child's need to take medication or receive health procedures at school. The Health Information Questionnaire (Nickel, 1998) is one example of a tool to assist in this exchange of information. Health professionals may also request a formal school progress report, results of standardized testing done by educational staff, and completion of behavioral questionnaires. Use of the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach, 2001) or similar standardized questionnaires will provide an overview of the child's school performance as well as specific information on potential internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Please also review the materials in the section, Information for Educators, on individual child health plans and emergancy management plans in educational settings. Health care professionals play a critical role in the development and review of these plans. |
