Fish oil for depression in multiple sclerosis

07/01/04-06/30/09
Funded by NCCAM/NIH # 1K23 AT002155-01
PI: Lynne Shinto, ND

The primary aim of this pilot study is to determine if fish oil supplementation is an effective and safe adjunctive treatment for mild to moderate depression in people with MS. The study will also assess the effect of fish oil on levels of inflammatory cytokines that are associated with both depression and MS. This will be a 3-month randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled pilot trial of fish oil supplementation for the treatment of mild-moderately depressed people with MS.

Fish oil & alpha lipoic acid in mild Alzheimer’s disease

09/30/03-08/31/05
Funded by NIA/NIH # 1-R21-AG023805-01
PI: Lynne Shinto, ND

A 3-arm, double-blind placebo controlled pilot study that will evaluate the ability of fish oil alone and fish oil plus alpha lipoic acid to decrease oxidative stress in people with probable Alzheimer’s disease (AD) that have mild cognitive impairment. We will also collect preliminary data on the treatments’ effect on inflammation and lipid levels, and evaluate the safety of both treatments in this cohort.
