CAM Related Research From the Ophthalmology Department and Casey Eye Institute at OHSU

The OHSU Ophthalmology Department, Casey Eye Institute is currently involved in the following projects studying the role of nutrition and dietary supplements in age-related eye disorders (age-related macular degeneration or AMD and cataract).

Carotenoids and Lipids in AMD

PI: William E Connor, MD
Funding: Foundation Fighting Blindness/R Weleber

Evaluating the role of lutein and zeaxanthin in AMD. Includes determination of the relative amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin in the macula and plasma of AMD and control patients, the influence of dietary modification, and assessment of absorption and transport mechanisms.

Carotenoids in Age-related Eye Disease Study

PI: C Ritenbaugh/M Klein
Funding: Kaiser/NEI

Collaborative study evaluating the role of lutein/zeaxanthin in age related maculopathy in the Women's Health initiative - Observational Study. includes assessment of the carotenoid pigments in the diet, blood, and macula and their relationship to the prevalence of early age-related maculopathy and cataract. A second objective is to identify dietary, lifestyle and other determinants of macular pigment levels in this population.

Age-related Eye Disease Study

PI: M Klein
Funding: NEI/Dever Eye Institute
