Division of Health Promotion & Sports Medicine: Ongoing CAM Research

  1. The PHLAME study (Diane Elliot M.D., M.D.) is focused on improving the nutrition and exercise practices (improvement in fruits and vegetables among fire fighters to alter risk factors for vascular disease and cancer.  Funding is now in its second multi-year funding cycle and its beneficial effects are being disseminated across the United States.
  2. The STOPP T2D trial is a multi-site, multi-year NIDDK school based nutrition and physical activity prevention trial to reduce Type 2 Diabetes among adolescents; focusing on PE classes, Food Service and behavior changes that will improve diet, increase physical activity and reduce sedentary activities.   3. The ATLAS and ATHENA programs.  These are health promotion and drug prevention programs to reduce alcohol and drug use among middle school and high school athletes.  ATLAS (the male program) has been designated as a Model Program by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and an Exemplary Program by the U.S. Department of Education.  The interventions are team-centered, gender-specific and school-coach facilitated programs that focus on improving the health of young student-athletes by healthy nutrition by using low-fat, high carbohydrate diets and strength training.(Linn Goldberg, M.D. PI of ATLAS, Diane Elliot M.D., PI of ATHENA).
