Yassar Arain

Southern California, born and raised, on the basketball court is where I spent most of my days…ok, ok, I’m not Fresh Prince. Although, I am the second child of Pakistani-American parents. I grew up near Disneyland in Placentia, CA, and moved  south to attend San Diego State University. Prior to beginning at OHSU, I lived in Cairo, Egypt as a Fulbright student conducting research and working with the refugee community. I cherish the time I spent living in the Middle East, and long to travel more. Had I not been fortunate enough to pursue medicine, I like to think I would have helped revive the lost art of journalism. I have affection for all sports, especially basketball and football. Having spent most of my life in warm weather, my wife and I have come to embrace Portland for its beauty, hospitality, and love for coffee.

Ever wondered what life is like as a student at OHSU? What does it take to become a researcher? Just how gross is gross anatomy? Welcome to the blog that answers these – and many other – questions. It’s students writing first-hand about their commitment to careers in science and health care. It’s honest about the challenges as well as the joys. It’s not always pretty. But it is our story. Thank you for sharing it with us. And please, let us know what you think.
