Hello! I’m a new addition to the OHSU School of Nursing, as well as to the StudentSpeak Blog. I am grateful and honored to be a part of such an outstanding community of students, faculty, and health care professionals.

This past June I arrived onto the OHSU campus, with most of my earthly possessions stacked precariously in the backseat of my car. The 2-½ hour, 154-mile drive from my home in the Greater Seattle area was one I had made countless times before, yet this time felt completely unlike any other. This was a new journey, as I was leaving home for the very first time in order to start my adventure as a nursing student in the AccBacc-to-Master’s program!

After earning my undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Washington, I worked at a psychiatric hospital for a year, which was the humbling and life-changing experience that ultimately motivated me to pursue a career in advanced practice nursing.  While many factors influenced my decision to attend nursing school, I was compelled by the idea that as a nurse practitioner, I would have the ability to improve access to primary medical care for the individuals in the community that need it the most. Of paramount importance to me is the idea that I can serve as a voice for those who are vulnerable, including those from diverse cultural backgrounds, in order to contribute to changes in the health care system that could help empower these individuals.

Becoming a nurse is my most challenging undertaking so far, but I am thrilled to be doing it here in Portland. I am charmed by my quaint and quirky new home, and having the opportunity to fly solo in this city is a wonderful experience. I’m in a great place to do the things I enjoy most: exploring the city, admiring historic architecture, vintage decorating, reading in coffee shops, perusing cool bookstores, and being crafty.

It is my sincere hope that the stories I tell will provide others with a place to relate and connect. After all, “We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface but connected in the deep.” –William James
