Understanding the Use of Intravenous (IV) Therapy in Zhenjiang City and Its Influence on China’s Public Health

“I am continually amazed by the rapid changes that are taking place in China, as soon as I first arrived. From Shanghai to Kunshan, to Suzhou, to Wuxi, and then to Zhenjiang, I finally reached my destination by train–traveling 280 kilometers maximum per hour, a speed that signifies how fast the country is marching forward. My local mentor Dr. Lu received me warmly with his colleagues from various medical fields. I was then presented with my first tasks in Zhenjiang: to carry out an in-depth survey of IV therapy and to experience the five local ‘3s’. ”

Participating in a Tapeworm Control Project and Teaching a Global Information Systems (GIS) Workshop in Peru

“Upon arriving in Peru, we traveled to the study site in rural Northwest Peru near the border of Ecuador. The area consists of semi-mountainous valleys of bosque seco (dry forest) and the economy is primarily subsistence agriculture and rice production. Crops include staples such as corn and rice, and a variety of livestock are raised including pigs, goats, chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, and pigeons. Notably, livestock roam freely within the communities as they forage for most of their food due to lack of economic resources to provide consistent feed.”

Community-based Interventions in Areas of Endemic Neurocysticercosis in Northern Peru

“As a team of twelve community healthcare workers and educators we began our work in pueblitos surrounding Piamas in Northern Peru. The team had traveled from the neighboring province of Tumbes to complete the first phase of a new study investigating whether targeted administration of the anti-parasitic drug niclosimide will prove as an effective method to interrupt transmission of Taenia solium in this region of high endemnicity. The project began with a six day census and an education campaign in both control and intervention communities and was followed by six days of work with pigs in the same communities.”
