This new program, conveniently shorted from “Grand Opportunities” to “GO”, will support projects that address large, specific biomedical and biobehavioral research endeavors that will benefit from significant 2-year funds without the expectation of continued NIH funding beyond two years. …because some of you have been asking. There is some confusion about whether the recently announced administrative supplements apply to R01s. The language of the announcement is this: “This announcement is for administrative supplements to active NIH Research Grants and Research Program and Center Grants (Ps).” The lack of an abbreviation for Research Grants (which would normally be “Rs” but which was left out of the announcement) has led some of you to believe that … Read More
Just off the presses: the NIH has announced three new types of administrative supplements – One for general supplements for many kinds of grants (Rs, Ps, Ks, Ts, and Us) to extend your research program within the scope of your previously funded grant, one for competitive revisions (i.e. supplements that are peer-reviewed) that can be used to extend the aims of your previously funded grant, and one for science education (stipends for summer high school … Read More

There have been some emails lately about the process for applying to various federal agencies for stimulus package funding at OHSU. If you’re planning to apply for NIH funds linked to Challenge Grants or other individual PI kinds of NIH applications, go for it. If you are looking for high-end instrumentation, shared instruments, core renovations, or facilities renovations, you’ll need to work through the Office of the VP Research (including the University Shared Resources Program). … Read More
Two notes about NIH stimulus funds today: New investigator? The two-year, non-renewable R01s are NOT your best bet. NINDS, for example, is not planning to give ARRA R01s to new investigators: they want new investigators to have longer periods of funding. Plus you’ll lose your ‘new investigator’ status and benefits. You should stick with ordinary R01s. Small businesses: there has been some doubt about whether small businesses that utilize SBIRs and STTRs were eligible for … Read More
The National Institute of Allergic & Infectious Disease has some helpful advice–as it often does–for what to if you receive stimulus funds: how to think about a two-year project, what sorts of reporting will be required, and other wisdom. This page is worth reading even if you don’t typically apply to NIAID and even if your program officer hasn’t sent you a happy announcement of unexpected funding. Check it out here. Each institute will have … Read More
Q: What is the economic stimulus package from the NIH? A: The official name for the stimulus package is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). A total of $10.4 billion has been allocated to the NIH. Below is a breakdown of how that money has been allocated within the NIH: $8.2 billion in support of scientific research priorities $7.4 billion is transferred to the Institutes and Centers and Common Fund (CF), based on a … Read More
Finally: the first announcements for NIH grants funded by the Recovery Act are here: the Recovery Act Limited Competition: NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research (RC1) . These 12-page challenge grant applications are due April 27th. The proposal format is similar to the Pioneer Awards (essentially, the new format they are proposing for R01s starting next year; see below). Awards are for up to $500,000 per year for two years (a total of … Read More
