Tissue engineering: Avathamsa Athirasala featured in OHSU In the Lab

More than 15 million root canals are performed each year in the United States. Current root canal procedures remove infected dental tissue and replace it with inert synthetic biomaterials, eliminating the tooth’s blood and nerve supply. Now, OHSU researchers have proven that fabrication of artificial blood vessels can be a highly effective strategy for fully regenerating the function of teeth.

Avathamsa Athirasala, a research assistant in the lab of Luiz Bertassoni, D.D.S., Ph.D., assistant professor of restorative dentistry, was lead author of the Bertassoni lab’s paper in Scientific Reports, where they reported the development. Athirasala is featured in the October issue OHSU In the Lab and talks about engineering these artificial blood vessels, a development that may change the way root canal treatments will be done in the future.
