OHSU participates in study on new treatment for rare lung disease
Alan Barker, M.D., professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine, has collaborated with researchers from the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to perform a clinical trial on the effectiveness of a common anti-rejection drug in treating a rare lung disease. While lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) affects only five in a million people, no cure for the disease exists—and many patients must resort to lung transplants. Dr. Barker and his colleagues found that the the anti-rejection drug, sirolimus, was effective in stopping abnormal cell growth caused by LAM.
