Remembering Senator Hatfield
Many of us at OHSU are mourning the passing of Sen. Mark O. Hatfield, Oregon’s longtime senator who was a champion of medical research and a staunch believer in the good work that is done at OHSU. President Joe Robertson released this statement to the media last night after hearing of Sen. Hatfield’s death. The senator’s contributions to Oregon and to the nation have been featured in a number of news accounts and editorials. Sen. Hatfield’s story is chronicled in the ninth floor lobby of OHSU Hospital; now is a good time to read again about his commitment to peace and life-sustaining work. Get a glimpse into Sen. Hatfield’s connection to OHSU by reading the notes for a speech he delivered to the 1887 Society Gala on May 22, 2004.

I had known Sen. Mark O. Hatfield when he came to our lab. He will be missed among our lab crew at OHSU. He was a wonderful man and very humble. He had taught me a good word ” Perseverance” when he heard about my hard life. I was grateful that he gave me a letter of recommendation when I had requested it for my school. I will always remember Senator Mark O. Hatfield as a great man who did big things.
