Safety as a practice, not just a motto

The last two weeks have been filled with events and initiatives supporting workplace safety and health. We acknowledge all of the organizations, owners, safety and health professionals, and workers who dedicated time and energy to renew their efforts to provide all workers safe and healthy workplaces. We honor: SafeBuild Alliance and the support of the construction community for their sponsorship of the kickoff to Safety Week at the Oregon Forestry Center, and metro-wide proclamations within … Read More

WestON brings news and humor

The 8th WestON (Western States Occupational Network) meeting in Denver (9/17-18) brought us important news, new ways of thinking … and humor.  NIOSH Director John Howard’s (below) appointment has been renewed for 6 more years.  Responding to a question about his reasons for staying at NIOSH, he said that he wanted to be sure there was continuity during the Executive Branch change in 2016 – many recognize that he has brought visionary and strong leadership to NIOSH. … Read More

Heading our Way: GOSH 2015

Every two years Portland hosts the Oregon Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health Conference. We have found GOSH to be the best value-packed opportunity to support professional development; mentor and welcome newer faces to Oregon, our profession and our work; and, rekindle long-term professional relationships. GOSH will be held March 9-12, 2015 at the Oregon Convention Center. The program is impressive, the exhibit hall is filling out, and registration is now open. What can you do … Read More

Aging and Longer Working Careers

An international conference on occupational safety and health was held earlier this month at the University of Trento, Italy. The University of Trento is a leading research institution in Italy in the areas of psychology and neuroscience, and I’m pleased to be a member of the doctoral training committee there.  Sabine Sonnentag (U. of Mannheim, Germany) and I were asked to give keynote talks at the conference. She spoke about recovery from work, and I … Read More

Our summer student research awards are three-month paid internships designed to introduce college undergraduate students to various fields of biomedical and occupational health research. All selected students are … Read More

Making a Difference

It seemed strange, at first, to jump from the joys and celebrations of the O[yes]video contest screening, to the sadness of Worker Memorial Day two days later. And yesterday was truly a day of mourning as we recognized the 46 Oregonians who died at work or at war in 2013. There is nothing we can do to bring them back, and we feel for their families and co-workers. We can, however, strengthen our efforts to … Read More

Oregon Healthy Workforce Center Advisory Committee Meeting Talks Future Directions

The Oregon Healthy Workforce Center (OHSC) External Advisory Committee assessed the 6 interventions (some call these solutions) in Oregon workplaces to improve safety, health, wellness and well-being as ‘impressive’ in that they had been conducted so quickly after funding and had recruited and retained sizable workforce samples (over 750 participants) from construction, corrections, home care, parks and recreation (young) workers, and workers with disabilities.  The OHWC is a NIOSH-funded Total Worker Health Center of Excellence. Are They … Read More
