OHSU Libraries / Collections
The holdings of the OHSU Libraries are divided into several different
collections, distributed throughout the Main Library and Old Library.
These collections are listed below. To access detailed information about
a particular collection, click on the link to the library that houses it.

The OHSU Library is located on the second, third,and fourth floor
of the BICC building. The public entrance,
Information Desk, and Circulation Desk are located on the third
floor.
Hours:
- Regular Hours
Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, 1:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Main Library stacks
Location designation: MAIN LIBRARY
Description: Books published during the last ten years.
Arrangement: Call number (National Library of Medicine and
Library of Congress classification
systems)
Circulation period: 28 days; may be renewed
Periodicals
Location designation: MAIN LIBRARY
Call number: PERIOD. COLL.
Description: Journals published during the last fifteen years.
Arrangement: Alphabetical by title of journal
Circulation period: Current five years are non-circulating;
older journals circulate for three days and
may be renewed.
Audiovisual collection
Location designation: MAIN--AV COLLECTION
Description: Videotapes, audio cassettes, filmstrips, slides,
and other audiovisual materials
Arrangement: Call number (National Library of Medicine and
Library of Congress classification
systems)
Circulation period: three to seven days
Reserve collection
Location designation: MAIN--RESERVES
Circulation period: two hours, in-library use only
Notes: The Reserve Collection is not open to patrons; you may
request desired items at the
circulation desk, and a staff member will retrieve the item(s) for you.
If you are a faculty member and would like to
put material on reserve for your students, please read
and fill out the form to

Storage stacks
Location designation:MAIN--STORAGE
Description: Books published from 1901 to 1984. Journals published before 1954.
Arrangement: Call number (National Library of Medicine and
Library of Congress classification systems)
Journals are alphabetical by title.
Circulation period: 28 days for books; three days for journals;
may be renewed.
Notes: The storage stacks are not open to patrons.
To access materials in this collection, request the desired item(s) at
the Main
Library circulation desk.
Requests submitted before 10:00 a.m. Monday - Friday
will generally be available by 2:00 p.m. the same day.
Requests submitted after 10:00 a.m. Monday - Thursday
will generally be available by 2:00 p.m. the following day.
Requests submitted after Friday 10:00 a.m. through
Sunday will be available after 2:00 p.m. Monday.
Reference collection
Location designation: REFERENCE
Description: Materials used frequently for ready reference
Arrangement: By category (see notes, below, for list), and
within each
category by call number (National Library of Medicine and Library of
Congress classification systems)
Circulation period: none; in-library use only
Notes: The reference collection is divided into categories.
Each category is identified by number,
as follows:
- Dictionaries--including subfields, specialties, nursing, etc.
- Syndromes--dictionaries, encyclopedias, manuals, handbooks, etc.
- not used
- Nomenclature and terminology--e.g. abbreviations, eponyms,
origins
- English quotations and usage--includes Roget's Thesaurus,
works of Shakespeare
- Foreign language dictionaries--all subjects; includes polyglot
- Travel--includes atlases, maps and tour books
- not used
- Manuals and guides--all fields, e.g. style, ethics,
standards, bylaws, rules
- Legal information--laws, statutes, codes, constitutions,
standards, licensing
- Almanacs and statistics--includes all reference material on
statistics
- Subject handbooks--all fields; includes data books,
monographs, etc.
- Encyclopedias--all works of encyclopedic nature
- Drug information--all reference material on drugs;
dictionaries, lists, etc.
- General directories--institutions, organizations, education,
agencies, etc.
- Biographical directories--all reference material listing people
- Bibliographies and histories--health science bibliographies;
history of medicine

- Library, computer and Internet information--includes
directories, manuals, handbooks, bibliographies
- not used
- Funding--includes grants, scholarships, fellowships, etc.
- Textbooks
- Consumer health
In addition, there is an Information Desk Collection, consisting
of heavily-used items from all categories.

Old Library
The Old Library is a closed stacks facility housing
older library materials - check the catalog
for specific item locations. The Old Library houses several collections, described below.
Classic Article Collection
Location designation: OHSU OLD LIB. - CLOSED STACKS - CLASSIC ARTICLE COLL.
Description: Journal volumes containing classic medical articles as identified by Garrison/Morton
Arrangement: Alphabetical by title of journal
Circulation period: Two hour, in library use only; may be renewed for additional 2 hours
Old Library Books
Location designation: OLD--LIBRARY
Description: Books published from 1985 to 1997
Arrangement: Call number (National Library of Medicine and
Library of Congress classification
systems)
Circulation period: 28 days; may be renewed
Notes: Materials
are paged
from the facility twice daily, Monday - Friday for delivery to a specified
campus library or to a campus mail address. Arrangements for browsing or research
can be made by emailing

Old Library periodicals
Location designation: OLD--LIBRARY
Description: Journals published from 1955 to 1992
Arrangement: Alphabetical by title of journal
Circulation period: Seven days; may be renewed

History of Medicine collections
Location designation: HISTORY OF MEDICINE COLL
Description: Books published before 1901, plus selected
materials published since 1901 which are rare, fragile, or of unusual
value. Includes the Whitman, First Class, and Sydenham Collections.
Arrangement: Alphabetical by main entry.
Circulation period: None; library use only

related to the practice of medicine in the Pacific Northwest and
materials published by OHSU and its legal predecessors (e.g. the

Manuscripts and Archives
Location designation: OHSU Manuscripts and Archives
Description: Administrative and fiscal records, architectural
drawings,
board and committee minutes and reports, books and transcripts, diaries,
illustrations, journals, manuscripts, memorabilia, paraphernalia and
ephemera, personal and official correspondence, photographs and
scrapbooks, and biographical and subject files related to the history of
OHSU and affiliated persons, as well as to the practice of medicine in
the Pacific Northwest. Also includes the Historical Image Collection and
the Medical Museum Collection.
