Melissa Hernandez is a student in the Neuroscience Graduate Program at Oregon Health & Science University.  She joined the research team in the Department of Anesthesiology and Peri-Operative Medicine in September 2006 and is investigating the neuroprotective properties of progesterone and the mechanisms that cause neuronal death following ischemia.

Melissa received the Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) in June 2005.  During her undergraduate program, she conducted research at UCI and at the Instituto de Neurobiología in Querétaro, México.  She studied the properties of neurotransmitter receptors, particularly GABAc receptors, and co-authored several related abstracts for meetings across the country.

When she is not at school, Melissa enjoys film, music, arts and crafts, and gardening.
