Dr. Donna Van Winkle is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Peri-Operative Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).  She holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at OHSU and is a member of the OHSU Heart Research Center.  She is also a Research Scientist in the Research Service of the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center (PVAMC) and Director of Research for the Anesthesiology Service at the PVAMC.

Dr. Van Winkle’s recent research has focused on elucidating the mechanisms of pharmacologic protection of ischemic myocardium and on gender differences in myocardial ischemic injury.  She has lectured on anesthetic-induced reduction of myocardial ischemic injury nationally and internationally, most recently at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists in Kobe.  In addition, Dr. Van Winkle is interested in the fetal origins of adult heart disease and has previously investigated autonomic and mechanical control of coronary vascular resistance.

Dr. Van Winkle has served on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology since 1995 and is a peer reviewer for numerous journals.  She currently sits on the American Heart Association Integrative Cardiac Biology and Regulation grant review board.  Dr. Van Winkle is also an active member of several professional societies, including the American Heart Association, the American Physiological Society (Cardiovascular Section and Cell and Molecular Physiology Section), the Association of University Anesthesiologists, the International Society for Heart Research and the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists. She was elected Fellow of the American Heart Association in 1997 and Fellow of the American Physiological Society (Cardiovascular Section) in 1998.

Dr. Van Winkle received her Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1988 under the guidance of Dr. Eric O. Feigl in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics.  She subsequently pursued postdoctoral training with Dr. James Downey at the
University of South Alabama and came to OHSU as an Assistant Professor in 1990.

Outside of the office, Dr. Van Winkle enjoys the outdoors, traveling and spending time with her husband and two children.
