Dr. Tonya Palermo is
an Associate Professor in the Department of
Anesthesiology and Peri-Operative Medicine (APOM)
with a joint appointment in the Department of
Psychiatry. Dr. Palermo is
Chief of the Division of
Clinical Pain and Regional Anesthesia Research. She also serves as
Director of APOM Clinical Research and Training, and
Director of the Coping Clinic where she provides
psychological evaluation and therapy to children and
adolescents with chronic pain.
Dr. Palermo has an
active research program in the area of pediatric
chronic and recurrent pain. She is particularly
interested in the psychosocial and family factors
that affect pain perception, daily functioning, and
quality of life in children and adolescents. As an
NIH-funded investigator,
Dr. Palermo is currently developing and
testing a cognitive-behavioral internet intervention
for youth with chronic pain;
and she is also
conducting a longitudinal study of sleep-wake
disturbances in adolescents with chronic pain.
Dr. Palermo is an
Associate Editor of the Journal of Pediatric
Psychology and serves on the executive board of the
Society of Pediatric Psychology. She is an active
member of the American Pain Society and the
International Association for the Study of Pain. Dr.
Palermo has also served as a research mentor to
numerous doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows
in pediatric psychology.
Dr. Palermo received
the PhD in Clinical Psychology (Pediatric
Psychology) from Case Western Reserve University in
1998. She completed a predoctoral internship in
Pediatric Psychology at Columbus Children’s Hospital
and then returned to Cleveland to complete a
postdoctoral research fellowship in Pediatric
Psychology/Pain Management at Rainbow Babies and
Children’s Hospital. |
