INTEGRATED AND TRANSLATIONAL TRAINING IN
ANESTHESIOLOGY RESEARCH

Patricia D. Hurn, Ph.D. – Principal Investigator

Over the past 40 years, the contributions of anesthesiologists to basic science and clinical research have increased. This trend must be preserved and enhanced in order to maintain safety and improve clinical care for anesthetized and critically ill patients. It is crucial, therefore, to train anesthesiologists so that they will have the skills to make basic scientific discoveries that can be translated into clinical relevance and that will advance knowledge in our specialty and in medicine globally.

This project is designed to provide this scientific training. In addition to three years of an exceptional education in patient care, postgraduate anesthesiology students enrolled in this program will receive two years of training in basic science and clinical research skills enriched by an interdisciplinary faculty from anesthesiology and collaborating clinical and basic science departments including neurology, medicine, neuroscience, pediatrics, neurosurgery, pathology, and physiology and pharmacology. Graduates of the program will be equipped to establish independent investigative careers that will ultimately improve patient care through enhanced knowledge.

This training grant is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
