Innovative 48 Month Scholars
Curriculum
Innovative Combined Programs in
Anesthesiology for physicians interested in careers
combining anesthesiology and critical care or
basic/clinical research.
Our department has been approved to begin training
residents in two innovative 48-month programs
beginning at the PGY 2 level. Residents entering
this program will choose either the
Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine track or the
Anesthesiology/Medical Scientist track.
Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine:
The Anesthesiology/CCM track is designed to allow
residents to complete all requirements of the core
anesthesiology program and the CCM fellowship over 48
months (PGY 2-PGY 5). The critical care rotations will
be distributed over the PGY 3- PGY 5 years, allowing the
resident a balanced training experience. The resident
would then be qualified to sit for the board examination
for both anesthesiology and critical care medicine. A
demonstrated interest in critical care will enhance the
applicant’s qualifications.
Anesthesiology/Medical Scientist track:
The Anesthesiology/MS track is designed to allow
residents to complete all requirements of the core
anesthesiology program integrated with 12 to 18 months
of research over 48 months (PGY 2-PGY 5). The resident
would then be qualified to sit for the board examination
for anesthesiology and receive an additional certificate
in research. Research may be either basic science or
clinically oriented, and will be mentored closely by
faculty. Demonstrated interest in research will enhance
the applicant’s qualifications.
