Clinical Facilities

The Site
Oregon Health Sciences University and Medical School campus is located about 10 minutes from downtown Portland, on top of Marquam Hill with an extensive view of the surrounding area.

The Facility

The clinical facility is a tertiary referral center particularly in the areas of obstetrics, trauma, oncology, cardiology and transplantation (liver, heart, lung, and kidney). OHSU Hospital is a 200bed facility and forms the backbone of the institution. There are 13 operating rooms in OHSU Hospital. Most of the major surgery requiring postoperative in-patient hospitalization is performed here. Surgical operations, including procedures involving cardiac bypass, cardiac transplantation, advanced neurosurgical techniques, and high-risk obstetrical cases provide a broad spectrum of anesthetic care. OHSU also is a Level I trauma center with a roof-top helipad to receive critically injured patients. The department delivers anesthesia care for 12,000 surgical cases and 2,500 obstetrical cases per year.

The Ambulatory Surgery Center is a separate facility located in the Multnomah Pavilion. This consists of six operating rooms, including two minimally invasive suites furnished with state-of-the-art equipment.

The Doernbecher Childrens Hospital (DCH), a 100-bed facility, opened in July 1998 with five brand-new operating rooms, induction rooms and a 16-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. A broad range of pediatric disease processes, including acute disease in normal children and more chronic problems in those with congenital abnormalities can be seen here. Patient ages range from premature babies to adolescents, DCH is the primary referral center for pediatric oncology patients in this region. The anesthesiology department also provides both a specialized pediatric sedation service for the comfort of children undergoing painful procedures in locations outside the operating room, and participates in pediatric pain management.

Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), opened in 1987, and forms an integral part of the OHSU residency program, performing about 4,500 cases per year. This hospital functions as a tertiary care center, with an emphasis on surgery for coronary artery and peripheral vascular disease, total joint replacements, procedures for cancer and neurosurgical procedures. The VAMC caters to an elderly population, and fundamentals of geriatric anesthesia are learned there.

The OHSU Comprehensive Pain Center, under the direction of Dr. Brett Stacey, offers a multidisciplinary approach to pain management and includes a specialized treatment area with dedicated fluoroscopic imaging equipment facilitating the invasive treatment of chronic pain syndromes.

Casey Eye Hospital provides general and specialized ophthalmologic care to patients within a wide area extending throughout three states.
