Letter from the Chief Residents
Dear Applicant, Welcome to OHSU’s Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine (APOM). Our anesthesiology residency program integrates excellence in patient care, clinical teaching, and research. Residents who train here gain a broad clinical experience across general and specialty anesthesia under the mentorship and guidance of nationally recognized teachers, clinicians and researchers. We offer innovative training tracks (Oregon Scholars Program) which integrate fellowship training in critical care medicine or research with our core anesthesiology residency. Most importantly, OHSU is a supportive and stimulating environment, which will foster and facilitate your growth into an outstanding anesthesiologist.
OHSU and the Portland VA Medical Center provide us with a large medical center complex integrating a university hospital and Level I trauma center, a VA medical center, the freestanding Doernbecher Children’s Hospital as well as an ambulatory surgery center. Throughout the residency, you will gain experience, autonomy, and comfort with increasingly complex patients and challenging cases. Residents rotate through general and subspecialty anesthesia, including cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, thoracic, ambulatory, liver transplant, pain medicine, intensive care, pediatrics, perioperative (preoperative assessment clinic and postoperative acute care unit), and regional anesthesia.During the CA-1 through CA-3 years, educational experiences outside of the operating room include our weekly didactic series, weekly grand rounds, weekly group oral board sessions led by Dr. Kirsch, our department chair, and seminars in regional anesthesia and TEE. Twice yearly, each resident participates in an individual oral board session under realistic conditions. We also rotate through the simulation center each year. The Wendell Stevens Program provides funds for at least one resident each year to participate in a medical mission providing anesthesia care in an underserved international location. Residents are given generous continued medical education time and funds throughout residency to purchase textbooks/study materials, attend CME conferences, educational symposiums and/or board review courses.
Our residency is focused on patient care and clinical excellence. We offer outstanding education in all areas of our specialty:

A significant benefit to our residency is its location in Portland, Oregon. Portland is home to some of the country’s best restaurants, microbreweries and outdoor parks. Downtown Portland is a vibrant city center with frequent festivals, concerts and activities. We are a bicycle commuter friendly city and many of our residents ride to work each day.
OHSU pays employee's about $50 per month that you ride your bike to work. Outdoor recreational activities abound. Portland is an easy drive away from year-round skiing and snowboarding at Mt. Hood, the Pacific coast, or the heart of the Willamette Valley wine country.
OHSU is an outstanding environment for anesthesia residency training, not only because of the because of our nationally recognized researchers and teachers, but also due to the
residents who have chosen to train here. Thank you for your interest in our program and we invite you to get to know the people in our department who make this such an incredible place to train and work everyday. Please contact us with any questions you may have about our program or life in Portland.
Sincerely,
