Wendell C. Stevens, M.D.

Wendell Stevens was born in Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa (UI) in Iowa City and earned his M.D. from the UI Medical School in 1956. He served his internship in Cleveland, Ohio, and spent a few years training to be a surgeon before deciding on a career in anesthesiology, completing his residency in 1963 at Iowa.
Following three years at UI as assistant professor, Dr. Stevens was recruited to University of California, San Francisco. By 1977 he had been promoted to professor of anesthesiology and, in 1978, he returned to UI and was appointed professor and chairman of the department. In 1982 he moved to Oregon Health & Science University where he served as department chairman until 1992.
In addition to his work at OHSU, Dr. Stevens is remembered as a director of the American Board of Anesthesiology from 1975-88, serving as president of the Board in 1987-88. He was a member of the Joint Council on In-Training Examinations and a specialist site visitor for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Dr. Stevens also distinguished himself as a Naval Officer and as a medical missionary in Kenya and the Dominican Republic. He had prominent appointments in the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA), the American Medical Association (AMA), and the Christian Medical and Dental Associations, and was on the editorial boards of a number of journals.
Dr. Stevens and his wife, Lola, had three children.
