Hippocampal volumes are measured for many Center studies. Because the hippocampus plays a critical role in memory function, volume changes are of particular interest to those studying cognition. The procedure includes a landmark-based determination of the coronal slices which display the body of the hippocampus. On these slices, cross-sections of the magnified hippocampal body and parahippocamal gyrus are traced using NIH Image. The resulting values estimate the volume of the body of the hippocampus (about 12 mm long) and the corresponding section of the parahippocampal gyrus.

Using 4mm coronal T2-weighted images, three hippocampal cross-sections immediately posterior to the head of the hippocampus must be measured to obtained the hippocampal body volume. Below are sample images of the traced hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus.
