Clinical Ethics Consult Service

503-494-4466

The Clinical Ethics Consultation Service is a multi-disciplinary team of health care professionals who have formal training in health care ethics. They are available to respond to requests for consultation regarding ethical dilemmas in patient care.

In general, requests for consultation are answered by the on-call Ethics Consultant. The consultant will make arrangements to discuss the case. The consultant will go to the clinical unit, review the patient chart and talk with members of the health care team the patient’s family regarding the situation.

The goal of the ethics consultation is to collaborate with the health care team to:

  • Broaden the process of discussion
  • Clarify the options
  • Organize suggested resolutions

Who may request an ethics consultation? Any member of a patient’s health care team may request a consult. The members of the consult service believe strongly that their role is to support the function of the health care team. For this reason, the service will not accept or support anonymous requests for consultations. Consultations will be provided with the knowledge of the attending physician.

How may patients or families request an ethics consultation? The health care team may request a consultation on behalf of the family. If appropriate, patients and family members may be directed to the Patient Advocate’s Office.

The Clinical Ethics Consultation Service provides support to health care teams in making decisions about issues such as:

  • Confidentiality
  • Withholding or withdrawing medical treatment
  • Disclosure
  • Treatment refusal
  • End–of–life issues
  • POLST
  • Advance Directives
  • Other ethical questions/concerns in patient care
