OBSTETRICAL SERVICE
Year 1—lowrisk OB
Year 2—highrisk OB
Year 3—highrisk OB
Year 4—supervisory role
At the University Hospital the Obstetric Service consists of a team of three residents (an Intern, a second year, and a chief), one from each class. This service does close to 3,000 deliveries a year and is at capacity most of the time. Faculty perinatologists attend the high-risk obstetric service, rotating in one-week blocks. The attending perinatologist provides consultant services to the generalists who provide faculty coverage of Labor and Delivery during weekdays.
These faculty members have no other assigned duties during the time they cover the Labor & Delivery area and are dedicated to including educational opportunities during the day-to-day activities on the ward. The attending physicians on Labor and Delivery attend all procedures including all deliveries, cesarean sections, tubal ligations and other operative procedures. All patients on Labor and Delivery are formally presented to the attendings upon admission and at rounds. Attendings work closely with residents in a teaching capacity, but also act as team members.
The residents are responsible for educating and supervising medical students and family practice and emergency medicine residents on the service. Teaching activities are emphasized in the clinical setting.
