Nights

The on-call team at University Hospital assumes responsibility for the obstetric and gynecologic services following afternoon board rounds until morning rounds. Weekend call duties are on a 24-hour shift. An intern, a second-year, and a chief resident on the Night Call Rotation take call from 6:00 PM to 8:00 AM, Sunday through Thursday night. These residents assume first call responsibility on Labor and Delivery during the night. Generally, the intern and the R2 are up all night. The Chief receives calls from the wards for gynecology patients, covers the ER, and assists the faculty with supervision of the junior residents. These individuals have no other duties during the time between L&D shifts. There is generally a teaching session with the faculty and medical students at some point during the night, and the residents on the night rotation also attend Friday morning Grand Rounds and resident lectures.
