The Gynecology Service at University Hospital is a resident-run service consisting of a team of three residents. A generalist faculty member provides daily consultation and supervision of the residents on the Gynecology service for a one month block. Residents perform work rounds on inpatients twice daily with consultation as needed from faculty. Formal attending rounds occur on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, with a weekly preop conference on Tuesday at noon. The GYN team also meets on a weekly basis for a one-hour pathology session with Dr. William Rogers, GYN pathologist, where benign GYN pathology specimens are reviewed.
The GYN team participates in benign gynecology surgery every Monday and Wednesday at University Hospital and gynecology surgery at the Veterans Hospital on alternating Mondays. The chief resident on the team is responsible for resident assignments based on the complexity of the surgery and the educational needs/experience of the residents. Residents scrub on all of the cases and are, in general, the primary surgeons. Faculty scrub on every surgical procedure and attend every clinic. Residents see all gynecologic patients preoperatively, intra-operatively, and postoperatively. A weekly pre-operative clinic provides opportunities to learn the details of informed consent, discussion of surgical options, etc.
During the day, inpatient GYN consults, Emergency Room consults, and urgent care needs are met through a GYN consult pager. It is the responsibility of the three residents covering this service to address the needs of each call. The GYN R3 also attends colposcopy clinic and an outpatient abortion clinic once a week to receive training in both first and second trimester pregnancy terminations. GYN patients hospitalized for non-surgical indications are admitted and cared for by the GYN team. Every procedure, which occurs in the Emergency Room or the outpatient clinic, is staffed by faculty. A variety of clinical settings and specialties make this service one of the most challenging and most rewarding. Residents appreciate the level of autonomy they have in determining the needs of the service and implementing a coverage plan while covering the gynecology service.
