Associate Professor Dr. Karen Adams directs the OHSU OBGYN residency program. Dr. Adams is a general OBGYN physician with an active faculty practice specializing in menopausal medicine and complementary and alternative medicine. Her other interests include reproductive ethics, physician wellness, and medical education. She chairs the Ethics Committee of the American Medical Women’s Association, and she is course director of the Healer’s Art, a medical school elective that explores the tradition of service in medicine and the physician’s role as a healer.
Dr. Adams completed medical school at the University of Texas at Houston and is an alumnus of the OHSU OBGYN residency program. After graduation she spent five years in a busy Portland private OBGYN practice before returning to OHSU as a faculty member, an experience which gives her a unique perspective of both the private practice and academic medicine worlds. She joined the OHSU faculty in 1997 and became Program Director in 2003.
She has received numerous teaching awards, including the Faculty Mentor Award presented by the 2005 OHSU School of Medicine graduating class, the 2006 Outstanding Contribution to GME Award, and the 2007 Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence in Teaching Award. She also was one of four OHSU faculty selected as a finalist for the 2007 Faculty Senate School of Medicine Teaching Award, and she completed the APGO/Solvay Educational Scholars Program, a competitive program that trains faculty in educational theory, practice, and research, in 2006.
Dr. Adams’ outside interests include yoga, kickboxing, quasi-gourmet cooking, and international travel with her husband and daughter.
