Overcoming Unintended Consequences of Physician Order Entry Implementation Menucha Retreat and Conference Center Conference Participants
This conference was supported by grant LM 06942-01 from the National Library of Medicine. Terri is Clinical Systems Manager at Alamance Regional Medical Center. She served at the Project Director for the implementation of CPOE at Alamance and often speaks about physician adoption of CPOE at healthcare industry conferences. She is currently serving as Project Manager for the implementation of PACS and plays a key role in assisting the organization in its efforts toward achieving an Electronic Health Record. She earned her BSN from UNC-Greensboro and her MBA from Elon College. Back to list Jim is Decision Support Pharmacist for Providence Health System Regional Information Services in Portland, Oregon. Jim is a graduate of the Oregon Health & Science University's Medical Informatics Masters program. He has also participated in the POE study as a member of POET and has contributed an invaluable pharmacy perspective to this study. Back to list Homer is the Medical Director for Clinical Information Systems for Kaiser Permanente Northwest (KPNW) and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology at the Oregon Health & Science University. He has been responsible for overseeing the clinical information systems development for the Northwest region. Kaiser Permanente Northwest won the 1998 Davies CPR Award for work done in implementing the EMR. The eight regions of the Kaiser Permanente Program are currently implementing KP HealthConnect, a comprehensive set of integrataed clinical and business systems building on the pioneering work done in the Northwest. care. Homer is a board certified internist with formal training in Medical Informatics. He is a member of the College of Health Information Management Executives (CHIME) and a Fellow in the American College of Medical Informatics. Back to list Brian Churchill, R.N. M.S., Ph.D candidate Brian is the project lead of POE implementation at PeaceHealth Inc.'s five Pacific Northwest hospitals. He has been an R.N. for 24 years with clinical experience in the ICU. He is currently completing his Ph.D. in Public Health and Healthcare Informatics at Oregon State University. Brian has worked with clinical computer systems for nearly 15 years and has spent the last 7 years working on the implementation of the IDX product LastWord. Brian's active and leading involvement in a POE implementation will bring a current and unique perspective to this panel. Back to list John is an internist with 21 years of clinical experience in direct patient care and 10 years experience using Electronic Medical Recrods at the point of care. He has worked for Siemens, Eclipsys and NextGen developing and implementing clinical decision support and computer order entry systems. Presently, he is the Product Manager for the Centricity Enterprise Ambulatory Care at GE Healthcare Integrated Systems. He lives in Philadelphia but works in Salt Lake City in the GE-Intermountain Healthcare Partnership. Back to list Dick is Chief Medical Information Officer for the Providence Health System, which spans a four-state area: Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and Southern California. He is an emergency physician and family physician who also trained in Medical Informatics in Salt Lake City, Utah. He moved to Portland, Oregon six years ago to take his present position and has been instrumental in implementing a variety of clinical information systems for Providence. He is presently involved in the planning of a POE implementation. Dick brings valuable clinical informatics and implementation expertise to this conference. Back to list Janet works for IDX Corporation as Lead Software Designer (Order Communications). She has significant experience with the GE product LastWord and has been involved in a number of POE implementations involving LastWord. Janet brings a unique and important vendor perspective to this conference. Back to list Karen is Director of Systems Support Services at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. She was instrumental in the development and implementation of their home-grown Clinician Order Entry system called “Wiz Order.” Her 15-member department is responsible for training and user support for 6 different clinical systems, including Clinician Order Entry (Wiz Order), Electronic Patient Record (MARS/Starchart) and a commercial ADT system. After an unsuccessful implementation of a proprietary system in 1992, her team responded with renewed efforts and a goal to develop a system that clinicians can actually use. They have now successfully implemented Wiz Order on all but two inpatient units and have approximately 67% of total orders entered by physicians. Karen’s perspective will deliver valuable first-hand experience with both implementation failure and success. Back to list Gil is the Director of Quality Informatics at Columbia Presbyterian Cornell Medical Center. His evaluation work has included studying the epidemiology of adverse events and the ability of information systems to reduce the frequency of these events. His order entry application at Brigham and Women's Hospital has been recognized as an important example of how information systems can improve care. Gil will contribute valuable insight in knowledge-based systems, evaluation, and order entry applications. Back to list Nancy has an A.B. degree in Psychology from Youngstown State University, an M.S. degree in Medical Informtion and Library Science from Case Western Reserve University, an M.A. degree in Solicology from the University of Louisville, and a Ph.D. degree in Organizational Behavior from the University fo Cincinnati. Dr. Lorenzi began her career at the University of Cincinnati, first as Director of Medical Center Libraries, and later as Director of Medical Center Information and Communications and has gone on to receive such honors as her appointment as the U.S. Representative to the Internation Medical Informatics Association and her selection as one of the 100 most notable medical librarians in the last 100 years by the Medical Library Association. In 2004 Lorenzi received the Marcia C. Noyes Award, the highest award fromthe Medical Library Association to honor lifetime achievements; and later in 2005 Lorenzi was honored by inclusion into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing as only one of five people internationally. She is a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, and a fellow of the Medical Library Association, of which she has been a member since 1965. Dr. Lorenzi is actively involved with the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), serving presently as President from 2004-2007. Dr. Lorenzi's research interest include organizational behavior, management, leadership adaptability; use of medical information, and information management in medical environments; and human aspects of integrated information systems, especially strategies for physician involvment and acceptance. Back to list Jason is currently in the Department of Health Evaluation Sciences at University of Virginia. From 1998 to 2000, Dr. Lyman was a National Library of Medicine Medical Informatics Fellow at OHSU, where he researched the development and evaluation of web-based clinical image database that uses a standard vocabulary, SNOMED, to represent clinical concepts. He also was a qualitative researcher in the areas of physician order entry and information management. Back to list Randy is the Donald A.B. and Mary M. Lindberg University Professor of Biomedical Informatics, Medicine & Nursing, at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Miller is well known for his expertise on medical diagnostic systems and knowledge bases. He is past President of AMIA, and editor of JAMIA. Recipient of awards too numerous to mention, we look forward to his insights about the unintended consequences of implementing CPOE, especially in re decision support. Back to list W. Paul Nichol assumed the position of Assoociate Chief of Staff for Clinical Information Management at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) in 2001, after holding numerous clinical managment positions at several VA facilities. he academic appointments include Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, School medicien, and Clinical Associate Professor in Health Services, School of public Health at the Univesrity of Washington in Seattle, Washington. VAPSHCS is nationally regonized for its use of information technology in health care and received the Nicolas C. Davies Award in 2000 for its implementation of the VHA Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS). In conjunction with the Madigan Army Medical Center, it is one of three national demonstration sites for Information Technology Sharing between the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense. Dr. Nichols's interests include electronic medical records and other point of care information technologies, personal health records, telemedicine, and their use in imporving health care systems and management of chrionic illnesses. Dr. Nichol serves as member of the VHA Health Information Systems Executive Board for Health Provider Systems and is the co-chair of the VHA MyHeaaltheVet Clinical Advisory Board. He received his undergraduate education at Dartmouth College and attended Duke University School of medicine (MD Degree). He completed his reidency training at the Oregon Health Sciences University where he also spent a sabbatical year in 2001 pursuing interest in medical informatics. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and received a certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatrics. He maintains an active practice of direct patient care and teaching medical students and residents. Back to list Tom is presently Medical Director of Medical Enter Information Systems and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Washington. He has won accolades for his leading effort as Associate Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Information Management at the VA Puget Sound Health Care system during the implementation of their computerized patient record system (CPRS). VA Puget Sound received the 2000 Davies Award for its implementation of CPRS and related software. He believe that many of the challenges of designing and implementing these systems involve changing the work patterns of health care professionals. Tom brings extensive expertise and experience in implementation issues as they relate to inpatient and outpatient care. Back to list
Brian is the Chief Medical Inforamtion Officer for HealthEast Care System. Dr. Patty's responsibilites include supporting clinical applications of technologies that improve systems for care management, medical records, physician order entry, electronic health records, laboratory services, pharmacy robotics, and PACS (Picture Archive Communication System which eliminates the need for X-ray file). He also acts as liaison and works closely with medical and nursing staff, administration, and IT. Back to list Eric is a Physician Researcher in the Clinical Informatics Research & Development group at Partners HealthCare Sysetem and a practicing internist at the Brigham Internal Medicine Associates at the Brigham and Womens't Hospital. His main interest have revolved around the use of electronic medical records to improve the quality of care and patient safety. He is serving on the barcode/eMAR implementation team at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he is coordinating research activities to study the impact of barcode/eMAR technology on medication safety, provider satisfaction, and workflow. Other current projects include outpatient order entry, medication reconciliation, and clinical decision support for pediatricians. Dr. Poon received his Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School and his Master of Public Health Degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. Back to list Michael is Chief of Staff, Director of Surgical Intensive Care, and Medical Director of Enterprise Information Services at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, and has published widely in the field of informatics as well as in neonatology. Dr. Shabot and Cedars-Sinai won the Diana Forsythe Award in 2002, in recognition of research that best exemplifies the spirit and scholarship of Diana Forsythe's work at the intersection of informatics and social sciences. Back to list Jonathan Teich is an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard, and a board-certified attending physician in emergency medicine at Brigham and Women's hospital. He founded the Brigham and Women's Center for Applied Medical Information Systems in 1992, and has been the primary designer of many of the Brigham's well-known clinical information systems, including the computerized provider order entry system. In 1999 he helped found Healthvision, a leading healthcare information company devoted to realizing patient care quality improvement through Internet-based clinical, patient, and community systems, not in use in over 250 hospitals and health systems. Back to list Mark Zielazinski, who has more than 20 years of experience in health care information systems management, joined El Camino in November os 2001 as cheif information officer (CIE). In a career that includes management positions with hospitals as well as with system vendors, he has been responsible for a wide range of inforamtion systems management, including contract negotiation, design and selection of major information systems, biomedical services, telecommunications and medical records departmentments of a large integrated delivery group in Florida. Mr. Zielazinski has also had responsibility for large consulting groups, leading both the technical and outsourcing arms of a successful nationwide professional service company. He received his bachelor of science degree from Illinois State University.
