About the Summer program...
The Center for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at
Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) offers a summer camp at OHSU for underrepresented
minority and
disadvantaged middle school students interested in pursuing careers in
the health and science professions.
The goal of this program is to provide students opportunities to
explore
various health care professions, gain hands-on medical and science
experience,
enhance their knowledge of math and science and increase competency in
computer
and communication skills.
Program Description
Your Opportunities in Science (YO Science) is a one-week
summer program. This
program offers 15 students a cost-free opportunity that explores
careers in the health care and science professions. Students
participate in applied life sciences and math classes, career
development seminars and are provided with hands-on activities to help
students see the application of science, math and other academic
disciplines. Selected students must participate from 9:00 am to 4:00 p.m.
for the entire week.
Requirements
Students must be underrepresented minority and
disadvantaged students who have completed 6th, 7th, or 8th grade by the
end of the school year. Students must have a strong interest in health
and science careers. In addition to the application form, students must
provide a one-page essay and a student recommendation from their
teacher, counselor or middle school official. Selected students and
