Navigating Portland by Bus
The city of Portland has one of the nation’s best public
transportation systems. In addition to TriMet busses, there
is a light rail system called MAX that will take you from
the eastern suburb of Gresham, through downtown Portland
and out to the western city of Hillsboro. The eastside light
rail has an extension that will take you from downtown to
the Portland International Airport. And in 2004 construction
will be complete on a northern MAX route from northeast Portland
to north Portland’s Expo Center.
You can purchase daily or monthly
TriMet passes in the Cashier’s Office in Baird Hall. If you
are an OHSU student or employee, you can purchase an all-zone
Tri-Met sticker good for one year.
Marquam Hill Campus via Public Transportation
Many bus routes go through downtown Portland, so if you
are unable to get to the Marquam Hill Campus by car, you
might consider living near one of the bus routes that service
OHSU. The No. 8 bus travels through downtown and up to the
Marquam Hill Campus daily. Tri-Met Marquam Hill express busses
include Nos. 61, 64, 65, 66, and 68, the Vancouver Wash. C-Tran
bus, and the Marquam Hill express No. 190. These busses only
run on weekdays in the mornings and afternoons. You can check
the exact schedule and routes for these buses on the Tri-Met website.
The Parking Office Web site has information
about TriMet, Marquam Hill Campus parking, West Campus parking
and carpooling.
West Campus via Public Transportation
To reach the West Campus using TriMet, take the MAX to
the Willow Creek station. An OHSU shuttle bus runs between
the Willow Creek station and the West Campus during commute
hours (7 to 9:30 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m., in 15-minute intervals).
Bus Nos. 47, 48, and 52 travel on 185th Avenue from the Willow
Creek MAX station.
Portland Highways
There are several major highways that go through Portland.
The main north/south highway is Interstate 5, which will take
you as far north as Canada or as far south as Mexico. I-5
runs north/south on the east side of the Willamette River.
When going south on I-5 from the north end of the city, the
highway will split off onto the Freemont Bridge and circle
the city on the west side of the Willamette River. This section
of highway becomes Highway 405, which intersects with I-5 again
at the southern end of downtown.
On the east side of the river,
I-5 intersects with Highway 84, also called the “Banfield.”
Highway 84 east will take you to the cities of Gresham and Troutdale,
and to the scenic Columbia River Gorge. Highway 205 intersects
with Highway 84 east, which connects southeast Portland to
east Vancouver, Wash. Highway 205 intersects with I-5 at its
north end in Salmon Creek, Wash., and reconnects with I-5 in
Tualatin, Ore. Highway 26 west, also called “Sunset,” takes
you to the Pacific Coast and Highway 101. Highway 26 east begins
by intersecting southeast Burnside Road in Gresham and takes
you directly to Mt. Hood.
Riding Your Bike
Portland is a very bicycle-friendly city. There are many
bike routes throughout the city and lots of racks on which
to lock your bike. For more information on biking in Portland,
see the Department
of Transportation Web site.
