Portland is about 1 1/2 hours from the Pacific Ocean and an hour from Mount Hood. Also known as “The Rose City,” Portland offers a lively atmosphere a wide variety of things to do and see.

If you like nature, the Columbia River Gorge is a very scenic area with waterfalls and hiking trails. The gorge is about 20 miles from downtown Portland.  A little closer to home is Washington Park.  Located in the west hills above downtown, this park boasts the International Rose Test Garden ,the Oregon Zoo and Japanese Gardens.

For arts and culture, check out First Thursday, an evening event held on the first Thursday of each month. Many local art galleries in downtown and northwest Portland stay open late.  Another good way to experience the city’s cultural offerings is to pick up a copy of Willamette Week , a local art and entertainment guide published Wednesdays, or buy the Friday edition of  The Oregonian.  These publications offer a weekly guide to events

For a unique shopping experience, visit Saturday Market, an open-air market where local artisans sell everything from clothing to art and antiques.  Another popular shopping district is the area just north of Burnside St. between 21st and 23rd Avenues.  This trendy district extends from Burnside to Petticoat Street., and offers a variety of small fashionable shops, restaurants and bars.
