Driver’s
License / State ID Card
You will need to go to
the Department
of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to obtain your
driver’s license or Oregon identification
card. Even if you will not be driving while in
Oregon, it is a good idea to get a state identification
card. There are many circumstances in which you will be
asked to show photo identification (e.g., when writing
a check or using a credit card), and while your passport
will work, it is a good idea to keep your passport
in a safe place. There is a small fee for a driver’s license
as well as a state ID card.

Portland at 1502 S.W. 6th Ave.

Learning
English
There are many different
options for English language classes. The

Newspapers
To locate the website
for any newspaper, worldwide, go to Allnewspapers.com.
They also have links to local radio and television
stations.
The Asian Reporter site
has many community contacts for all Asian countries.
The Portland
Chinese Times is a free Chinese newspaper distributed in Oregon
and Washington.
There
is a northwest community newspaper for the Hispanic
community called El Hispanic News.
There are two local papers which focus on
the African American community called The Skanner and
The Observer.
There are two online community sites that represent Portland's Indian
(India) Community: India Grid & Portland
Guru.
Social Security Number
Soon after you've arrived in the United
States, you will probably need to register
with the Social Security
Office and apply for a Social Security
card. The office closest to the Marquam Hill
Campus is located in downtown Portland at 1538 S.W. Yamhill.
